Chapter Seventeen

Jim

I REALLY THOUGHT telling her about my past would change things, and it has, only it’s made things more clear somehow. It was like she needed me to open the doors to our pasts so she could move forward.

“I found her,” I say without thinking about it. “After I got out of prison, I went to look for Rachel, and I found her.”

Amira’s eyebrows shoot up. “She was alive?”

“No.” I want to look away, especially with her intense brown eyes focused on my lips the way they are, but I can’t. It may hurt to say the words, but I know I need to get them out. “It took some time to track down her foster house, but when I finally got there she was dead. I wasn’t surprised, most of the world was dead by that point, but I didn’t know how much it would affect me. Knowing how she died.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was covered in bites. Like she’d survived the virus only to be attacked by one of the dead. How she survived an attack, I don’t know, but she must have fought them off or run away or something. The bites ended up killing her anyway, and then she turned.” I let out a deep breath. “But knowing how much pain she must have gone through, and that she’d been all alone in the end, it nearly killed me.”

This time when I exhale, I feel lighter. Like saying the words out loud has helped ease some of the guilt I’ve been carrying. It also hits me for the first time that as much as it hurts, I’m lucky to know what happened to my sister. I don’t have doubts about whether or not she’s alive. She didn’t disappear without a trace. That happens a lot these days, and even though it usually means death, it has to be torture.

Which is what Amira is going through right now.

When I meet her gaze again, I take her hand. “We’ll stay for a bit. Wait to see if your dad comes back.”

Amira’s brows pull together and she frowns. “Why?”

“Because you need closure, and if we can find it, then we should.”
